SSH is one of the greatest tools in a developers tool-belt. It can be used to set up complex environments, manipulate websites, for automating WordPress activities use great tools when all else fails, or to access a site. I’ll look at what SSH is and how you can connect through SSH.
Getting Started With SSH
According to the specs, SSH has been”a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network services over an insecure network”. Quite simply: access and it is not anything more than a means to log into a computer.

MIGRATE TODAY at No Cost
About OSX and Linux you have all you want to get started, you may use SSH from the terminal with no special software. On Windows you’ll need and SSH client, the one is Putty. I’ll give Windows users a quick Putty tutorial further down.
The host address is usually your domain name or and IP. At Kinsta we use your
Website’s IP address.
In some instances, if the default port is required, you might not need to define it. So we use different ports for different sites, In Kinsta we take security seriously.
If you’re a Kinsta client, you are able to find your server’s details on your MyKinsta admin. All our plans include SSH access. Pick you will find.
In fact, if you are using the terminal you can simply copy-paste the command generated for you personally in the SSH section to connect instantly (you will still need to put in your password naturally ).
This section is for Windows users, if you’re on Mac or Linux, skip to the next section. It is possible to run it by double clicking the icon As soon as you’ve downloaded Putty. You will see
You can get started right away by pasting your server address in the server name input field. Enter the number in the area next to it, make sure protocol is set to SSH and then click open.
You should see a Window that looks similar to a Linux terminal. It will ask for your username which you should input and press enter. Do the same with your own password, press enter and after a couple of seconds you should be logged inside.
Along the way you may find a telling about RSA fingerprints or other things. Don’t hesitate to press on OK to proceed.
Connect via SSH from the Terminal
This segment is for Mac and Linux users only, if you are a Windows user and you have already set up Putty, skip below.
On Mac or Linux all you need to do is open the terminal and issue a command. The command takes the form:
Substitute the data with your actual username, host name and port number and press enter. You will be asked. If you get any notifications about RSA fingerprints or other things feel free to press enter or”y” to proceed.
From that stage on the encounter is going to be exactly the same whether you’re on Windows or Mac. You have the option to issue orders, just as you would in the terminal to your own computer. There are lots of neat things you can do, especially if you’re on a Kinsta server! SSH access offers you much more freedom than you would have. This includes the ability. Your WordPress directory could be deleted by you, all of your images, stop essential services . Use caution if using SSH you can do a great deal of damage.
WP-CLI is a command line interface for WordPress and gives you a variety of neat tools. Kinsta servers have WP-CLI available out of the box so that you can start using it as soon as you log in. You may want to install it yourself, have a peek.
As soon as you’re up and running with WP-CLI you’ll be able to issue some commands! To do that you’ll need to move into a directory with WordPress installed. If you are not sure where you’re at the present time, use the ls command to reveal that the contents of the directory.
At Kinsta you are going to arrive on your site’s home directory. You will need to navigate into the public directory with cd people to enter the WordPress root directory.
Sort wp plugin listing to get a list of plugins available to the site.
To do something much more useful you could run wp plugin upgrade –all which would upgrade all your plugins simultaneously, or wp plugin upgrade –all –dry-run which will provide you a listing of plugins which would be updated if you would run the first control.
There are lots of useful commands WP-CLI commands, take a look at the Documentation for more info.
What Else Can I Do? You can start using other people to give you more control over your website and your deployment environment, and tools like Git, Composer, WP-CLI. If you are a Kinsta Enterprise customer, then you can even use tools like npm.
